On Oct. 30, Sprint Nextel (nyse: S - news - people ) severed its last connection to Cogent Communications (nasdaq: CCOI - news - people ), disconnecting two of the Internet’s five largest backbones. Instantly, major American and Canadian universities lost contact with each other.
